[Special to the Stah^J July 2*. At a of the Vestry of St. Mary's .Addington, it was decided to erect a belfry on the church kurn as a memorial to. the"late Premier. Some time befora his death lie expressed a desire to assist ia the erection of a suitable belfry, gave a subscription towards the 'work himself, and collected subscriptions from several personal friends, but a stun of about £BO waa still required. The vicar (the Bev. Waiter Bean) is a son-h>law # of the late. Premier. Ibe road from Mackenzie to Port Robinson (Cheviot) is blocked. The sea has washed tlie foot of away, and a slip came down, completely blocking the road.
For several days pas* the temperature, night and" day, has been almost absoratelv steady, varying between 45deg and 50deg. There was one dry night, hi which a'slight rise and fall were experienced, but otherwise the pencil of the observatory recorder i« traced almost on a straight line on the record.
