FIRE AT PALMERSTON.

A serious fire occurred in Ronaldeay street, Palmerston, about 1.30 this momtog,' wo shops being gutted and other places; haying a, very narrow escape. The wire received by Inspector O’Brien states that one shop was owned by Mr Robert Johnstone (of Rodyn), and occupied by Mr Sydney Bede (paperhanger), whose stock in ‘-he Standard Office for £l5O. | The tenant was absent when the fire rias discovered. The other place was occupied by Elizabeth Clements (grocer) and yas insured with the Norwich Union for £9O, while th© stock was insured in tibe Victoria Office for ,£2OO. The Bank of New [Zealand outbuildings were apparently burudl in some degree, but two other placed, one occupied by Mcs Omenta and c r^ ter by Craig and Co., wet© saved, aithtorih some damage was done to the stock by yater. The cause of the fire is utikuctin. The newly-formed fire brigade W ° splendidly (our correspondent infontw us), and it was their exertions that SaV X- Bank of New Zealand, and Craig’s premises.
