pSswaux to Tm Stab.] LAWRENCE, July 20. The Yttapelca Poultry Society's twentieth annual •show, held here on Wednesday and Thursday, was in wery respect a decided success. The number of exhibits was larger than usual. and the quality of the poultry vaa far in advance of "former years. The chief prize-takers in game were Messrs B. Hart and D. L. Christie; in golden Wyandottes. the South Island Championship was earned off by Mr D. C. Sinclair, of Mosgiel; in Plymouth Rocks, Mt G. Gordon was the chief winner ; in Leghorns, the honors weni divided among Messrs R. Robertson, Pearson and Robertson, A. B Ralph, and A. M. Eyes; in Orpingtons, Messrs Day Bro?. showed up most prominently. The other classes drew a fair number of exhibitor* and keen competition. Mr G. Double, of Invercargill, was the judge, and his awards met with general approval. We are in hopes that when the) Public Works Estimates are brought down next session of Parliament a substantial sum will appear thereon for prosecuting the construction of the Lawi«nce-Roxburgh Railway. We have the assurance that the Premier (Mr W. Hall-Jones) is decidedly in favor of the work being prosecuted with vigor. A stair" of surveyors, headed by Mr A. Stewart, who comes from the Cailins railway works, is now tai gaged in laying off the line from Bellamy. Station, at Evans Flat, to Beaumont. On this section is included.the Big Hill tunnel, wliich, with the cuttings on either side, will bo about twenty-two chains in length. This is the heaviest piece ol work on the line outside the bridging of th> Molyneux River. The annual bail held under the auspices of the Tuapeka Mounted Rifles on Wednesday night passed off very successfully. There was a very large attendance of troopers from fax and near, as well as of citizens. Mr John Thompson's friends will bo pleased to learn that he is again moving about, although still very weak, and unable to attend to his office duties. Mt R. Pilling, jun., has been appointee permanent secretary of the local Oddfellows lodge, vice Mr George Jeffery, resigned.
