At the Tokomairiro District High School on Wednesday afternoon a presentation was made by the scholars to Mr James Reid, who recently retired from tbo rectorship after twenty-six years' service. A large number of ladies and gentlemen were present, including several members of the School Committee. One of tho pupils, Miss Ivy Marryatt, in making the presentation of an easy chair, referred to Mr Reid's lengthy association with tho school, and Da behalf of the scholars expressed the hope that he would enjoy many years of peace and comfort in the chair. Mr Reid feelingly responded, thanking the children for their present; after which two or three members of the Committee made short speeches with reference to his long and able service, and expressed regret at his retirement. During the proceedings several choruacs were agreeably rendered by the scholars. I understand it is intended to tender Mr Reid a social on Friday night next, when the opportunity will bo taken advantage of by the teachers, extoachers, committee, and parents to make separate presentations to our esteemed exrector, t Captain M'Clymont presided at the annual meeting of the Bruce Rifles, held on Wednesday evening. The report submitted showed tho companv to be in a good position numerically, while the balanoetiheet showed a credit balance of £5 10s 6d, which is regarded as satisfactory whon it is considered that £IOO was pand for new scarlet uniforms. The report and balancesheet wero adopted, and the following aflice-bearers elected:— Secretary, Colorsergeant Lockhart; general committee— Farrell, Peattie, Powley, and Charters, Private Gregory; shooting coninut tec—-Sergeants Farrell, Peattie, Powlev, and Charters, Corporals Nicholis and Charters, Lance-corporal Straw. Privates Murray, Blaikic, and Gregory.
