RAILWAY WORKSHOPS LIBRARY.

■ - ' » The first cf a series of winter entertainments, the object of which is to popularise the Hillside Workshops library, was held in the South Dunedin Town Hail last evening. ' There was a very satisfactory audience, and I the excellence of the fare provided 3bould i ensure the success of the venture throughout the winter months. The president (Mr G. B. Richardson) was unable to be present, and Mr R. Farranfc presided. He explained that the entertainments are for the benefit of the library, and to bring it under the fpecial notice of workers generally. Tins library has been in existence for twenty-three .vcfrrs, and contains some 4,000 volumes of both a uacul and entertaining nature. In ,-articular it contains many volumes of instructive vaiue to apprentices, as well as books of sjwrt ?»;d fiction. The benefits of this library are available foT the small sum of 6d per month. The staple part of the entertainment consisted of a lecrarette by Mr W. Wflilams on 'A Holiday Trip in the Catlins Di?«ct.' The lecturer rflustrated hia little talk by limelight slides personally taken. These were judiciorusly chosen to show the beauty and character of the country, and th« whole of them were excellently tak=n Rnsga wrre given during the evening by Miss Butterworth and Mr O. Firkin, Mr \. E. Farrant recited, Mr T. H. Amos rendered a piccolo solo, and Miss Butterworth coiitribnrfo a pianoforte overture. Mr T. K.
