A poll of the Wellington ratepayers was taken yesterday upon the loan proposals j of the City Council, which involved the raising of £255,952 for various purposes. Amonir the votes allocated in schedule was £IOO,OOO for general electric light installation works, £IO,OOO for additions to public lighting, £30,000 for power for lifts, machinery, etc., £52, r 52 for extension, additional cars, etc., £27,000 for recreation grounds. All of the proposals except two "wei6 carried, these being £9,000 for a new public library and tramway offices, and £I,BOO for the erection of employees' honses. The Mayor of Auckland is strongly in favor of the Council building workmen's homes. He thinks a five-roomed house can be let for 10s a week, and a fourroomed house for 8s 6d. Henry L. Hamilton was committed for trial at Wellington yesterday on a charge of having forged cheques for £24 Is and £5. Alexander M'Kenzie, a billiard marker, was also committed for trial on a charge of having committed perjury in stating in evidence in a case heard on May 29 that he had never made any bets since he became a billiard-marker. Two private detectives stated that on April 17 they saw accused on the Christcburch racecourse receiving something from different people and make entries in a book.
