HOSPITAL TRUSTEES.
The monthly meeting of the Hospital Trustees was held yesterday; present—Mr P. Miller (chairman), Messrs J. Robin, T. Mackenzie, M.H.R., S. Solomon, A. E. Tapper, W. Wills, Dr Riley, J. X. Brown, »nd J. Mill.
—Correspondence.— The number of outpatients was reported aa 439.
A' donation of £2 2s from Reckitt and Sons, of Sydney, was received, the donors to be thanked.
Mason and Wales, architects for the new wing, reported that Mr Dow had been- appointed clerk of works in connection with the foundation construction. It had been found necessary to go deeper with the foundations than had been anticipated, owing to the nature of the ground.—Report approved. Mr J. M. E. Garrow intimated that His Excellency the Governor would be in Dunedin on the 25th inst, and would be present at the laying of the foundation stone of the new wing. The writer asked for a cheque of £IOO in connection therewith.— Request agreed to. Mr Garrow reported that additional sums received by him in aid of the building fund amounted to £3 2s 6d. This brought the total up to £6,745 14s Id.—Received. —Ourselves and Others.— A comparative statement showing the positions of the various hospitals in the colony was read. Amounts expended in salaries last year were : Dunedin, £3,117 ; Christchurch, £4,487; Wellington, £4,188 and £3,500 additional for wages ; Auckland, £4,415. Average daily number of patients: Dunedin, 103; Christchurch, 120; Welington, 204; Auckland, 174. Salar'es paid to matrons: Wellington, £156; Auckland, £140; Christchurch, £l2O ; Dunedin, £l3o.—The matter was referred to the House Committee, with instructions to bring up a report on salaries. —General.— Dr R. I. Ritchie, the only applicant for the position of lion, anaesthetist, was appointed. A proposal that the new building should be called the Seddon wing was made by Mr Tapper, but was not discussed. —Finance.— The Finance Committee reported that the receipts last month had totalled £B9O 12s sd, the principal items of revenue being: In-patients' payments, £197 2s 7d; and Government subsidy, £676 12s 4d. The receipts for July to'date were £lO7 15s 9d, *n-patients contributing £9B lis 9d. The bank pass book showed a credit of £1,615 18s 2d. The Committee recommended that the sum of £I,OOO, received from the Hospital Board on account of the building fund, be transferred to that fund from the general account; also that application be made to tie Hospital Board for the sum of £666 13s 4d, being the monthly proportion of the Trustees' requisition.—Adopted. —House Committees' Report.— The House Committee reported that Dr Burt w*as on leave of absence, his outpatient work being undertaken temporarily by Dr Bathgate and the house surgeon; that a Home order for drugs would cost about £l7O, and one. for X-ray appliances about £l6; that the tender of J. and T. Christie for connecting Victoria Ward and the Nurses' Home with a shortened svstem of steam pipes for baths, etc., had been accepted, at a cost of £9 18s; that donations of crutches had been received from Mrs Findlay, and literature from Mrs Romeril, Mr Melitus. Mr W. Binsted, and Mrs Laarie; that two food trolleys had been ordered from America, for use in the wards and the Nurses' Home. The Committee recommended that Sister Mandino's salary be increased to the full rate as from July 1; that the rcolut'on of the subscribers to the Hospital Extension Fund, askins that £IOO, the proceeds of a recent sale of work, be handed over to the Maternity Fund, bo given effect to; that the system of nursing in No. 1 ward be changed, and that this ward in future ho niperintended bv female nurses, with the assistance nf awarder when necessary: that Nurses Armstrong and Clark be promoted to the position "of sisters.—Adopted.
