IMPAIRS TO SCHOOL RESIDENCES.

The Lawrence School Committee tb-day aptplied to the Education Board for the full cost of. repairs to the teachers residence. Mr j. Mitchell ihoved that the request be granted. It was an. urijtist thing to ask committees to bear the cost of maintenance of, residences, for this entailed upon some a burden that did not devolve upon others where theTe were no residences and the teachers received house allowances. If he was not mistaken, the department made a special grant for the maintenance of these buildings, and if that sum, was not sufficient tie proper cbunse was to go to the Government for a more liberal allowance. If the work was to continue to rest upon committees, there should be a revision of the allowances, so that those who had the special work might receive a compensatory grant. The Chairman (Mr D. Borrie) said that the Board had time after time said what use the allowances to committees were for, and, if the Board had to take over this work they would have to revise the committees' allowances. The Hon. T. Fergus agreed to some extent with what Mi- Mitchell had said, but thought the matter should) be referred to the new Board. Mr T. Mackenzie, M.H.R., urged that the regulations should be uniformly applied. He believed in having a rule and adhering to it. Mr Mitchell said that he was not advocating any new principle. The Board had on other OdcaßiOns done the whole of the work. The (Chairman j In exceptional circumstances. Mi- Mitchell: And when there were no exceptional circumstaincete. The motion was lost, Mr Mitchell alone crying "Aye."
