PORT CHALMERS BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The fortnightly meeting of the a hove Council was attended hist evening by i!,o Acting Mayor (Mr G. Edgar), Crs J M'Pherson, J. Brandham, W. McDonald J. Shanks. J. Tait, D. Mawson.

—Reports.— The Finance Committee reported that I^IT^ S s, ? cel^t meeting amounted to A,±bU lbs, and recommended that accounts amounting to £lO4 12s be passed for parment. The Committee further reported that coupons amounting to £137 had been paid by the bank on account of new buildloan since the last meeting.-—Adopted. The Works Committee reported that the culvert on the Port Chalmers and Blueskin road was now completed, and recommended that the contractors be paid the balance of money due. The erection of the fence at Flagstaff Hill was ncaring comnietion, and the work of putting in the *6in pipe sewer at Scotia street was nearly finished. Two of the property-holders had connected, and others had yet to make connection. The work of connecting was being done by the inspector at the pro-perty-owners' expense. In reference to Mr Jacobson's application to connect his place with the tire}- street sewer, the Committee recommended that the request be granted, subject to the usual conditions. The Committee further reported that the tenders for the building of a strong room were far in excess of the inspector's estimate, and recommended that the work be done by the staff.—Cr Mawson objected to this. He considered that the lowest tender should be accepted. The present door of the strong room was quite, sufficient, as it only required a new lock.—The Acting Mayor stated that if the present door wa.s used it would require a new ironwork framing.—Cr M'Donald was also of opinion that the tender of Messrs Shanks and Rae should be accepted.—Cr Shanks objected to Messrs Shanks and Rae's corrected tender (£54 18s) being accepted bv the Council.—Cr Tait considered that the work should be done by the staff.—ln answer to Cr M'Pherson, the Acting Mayor stated that the cost of an iron door '6ft by 2ft 6in would be £9 10s.—On the motion of Cr Tait the report was adopted. The By-laws Committee reported having received an application from Messrs Luttrell and Scott, contractors for the new dock, to blast at their works. The Committee granted permisison, the firm undertaking to use every precaution in blasting. and to be responsible for any accident which might Occur.—Adopted.. • .
