MINING NEWS.

The Westport Coal Company’s output last week was 11,170 tons. There was no wash-up last week on the Wairmnrm Queen dredge nor on the Waikaka dredge. The latter was under repair. Yet another company—the Morning Light —are issuing debentures, for which the security is a mortgage over the dredge ami claim. The moving of the dredge, when purchased, for a distance of some twelve miles up the river, meant the incurring of am expenditure which it was impossible to estimate, and it became apparent that, tho funds of the company would have to be economised to carry the venture through. Present liabilities are £BOO. This is to l>e covered under the proposal by the issue of 250 debentures of £5 each, bearing 20 per cent, interest. There was better news this morning from Alexandra in Vegard to the Molyneux River as well as the Molyneux coal pit. The river has fallen to the Bft Sin mark, and hard frost has once more set in after a spell of unseasonably mild weather. This news had no appreciable effect on the share market this morning. Quotes were few, and as wide as ever. Both Hartleys and Electrics are in demand at par, but holders want much more. There has seldom been such inactivity in the investment stock market, even for a Monday morning. Buyers did not break silence except for two stocks, and sellers were not anxious to come forward in these or most other stocks. A GOLD RUSH. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright, MELBOURNE. July 16. (Received July 16. at 9.35 a.m.) There is much excitement over a gold discovery near Ararat, and the town is crowded with gold-seekers. For two milts the ground along the Hopkins River has been pegged out. It is stated there is nothing to warrant the rush.
