SCHOOL COMMISSIONERS.

Tbe monthly meeting of the School Commissioners of Otago was held to-day; firesent—Mr William Dallas (chairman), the Hon. H. Peldwick, Mr Thomas Mac Gibbon, Mr John Hay, and Mr Donald Borrie. Tile ranger reported that Mr A. Alex* onder is prepared to cut through sand spit opposite section 2, block 14, Wendon, and erect- groin for protective purposes, for the sum of £4O. He also recommended that as the owner of land opposite Mr Cooper’s place objects to any interference with the river unless a cut is made through section 15, block 14, Wendon, stone facings should bo put in at the worst places, and suggested that the Southland County Council be asked to contribute towards tbe work. —The report was adopted. The ranger reported a conference with Messrs Hamlyn and Robertson re cost of protective work at Domeburn, estimated at £44 15s, and that Mr Robertson will forward a statement of the expenditure that he is prepared to make towards the work.—Adopted. The ranger reported in connection with sections 16 and 18, block 3, Wendonside, that Mr Black is prepared to agree tothe cut through section 16, block 3, provided he gets a right-of-way, through Mr Hearts land; also that Mr Mortimer is unable to undertake th® works at sections 1 and 3, block 6, Wendonside, but that Mr J. Pollock will tender for it.—Adopted. Mr. James White applied for 10,000 4-inch drain tiles for sections 11 and 12, block 3, Wendon district.—Granted, on usual conditions.

Mr Moses MTuy, jun., applied for 5,000 3-inch drain tiles for section 13, block 3, Wendon district.—Granted, on usual conditions.

Mrs Helen Stewart,, lessee of sections 16 and 24, block 4, Aparima district, applied for reduction of’rent.—Consideration held over for further information. The Southland County Council forwarded a resolution to the effect that as the Council have already spent over £6O on the protection of Cooper’s road, they decline to spend any more. The Southland County Council drew attention te the fact that the Council had received no definite answer to their claim for thirds on School Commissioners’ lands administered by Land Boards.—Reply instructed that the matter is referred to the Minister of Education. The Wellington School Commissioners wrote stating that they have no occasion to desire extended powers by way of sale or exchange, bnt that they are cot antagonistic to the proposed measure if the Otago Commissioners find it in their interests to introduce legislation. Mr R. Brown, Myross Bush, asked if the Commissioners would agree to a transfer from Mr J. Loftus to himself of the lease of section 18, Hock 9, Invercargill Hundred. —No objection to a transfer on the usual conditions. Mr Warden M'Caxthy wrote agreeing to proposed coal lease of five acres at To A nan to D. Ross and Co., provided that a maximum of ICL and a minimum of 5s per tom at pit’s mouth be fixed.—3D Hay to explain tho position to the warden, Mr James Cooper, leasee of section 14, block 9, Waikaia, applied for permission to erect- a building at an estimated cost of £2s.—Granted, Mr B. Monaghan, on behalf of lessee of Bun 254b, asked that Mr M‘Gregor be prevented from carting coal through island opposite run.—Reply that as there is no rood through the island the lessee must protect his own interests. Messrs Mondy, Shu, and Stephens advised tho Commissioners that they can collect royalties from coal mines direct from the lessees.—Licensees to be notified to pay royalties direct to tbe Commissioners. Mr G. T. Forbes, lessee of allotment 2 of section 23, block 1, Invercargill Hundred, asked to be allowed to surrender in account of his bad health. —Onnot accept surrender, but no objection to a transfer to a suitable tenant. Mr John Qisserly, lessee of section 9, block 32, Limehill, asked the CommissionoTs to assist the Southland County Council towards getting him a road.—Agreed to spend £ for £ up to £3O total cost. 3D John Milne asked the Commissioners not to leas© section 65, Hock 8, Waikaia (qy. block 1, Waikaia), for more than one year at a time. —To he informed that the run is leased under the Mining Act, therefore subject to resumption. Tho Commissioner of Crown Lands, Dunedin, wrote stating that the Otago Land Board have not granted a leas© of the School Commissioners’ sections transferred from Mr Buckley to the King, but have granted yearly grazing righto to the adjoining tenants. Mr Anthony Paterson, agent for the trustees of th© late D. Main, applied for permission to transfer lease of section 2 of 65, Hook 3, Otepopo district, to William M'Millan.—Transfer agreed to on usual conditions.
