Prince Arthur of Connattgbfc having completed his visit and mission to Japan, left Yokohama for Vancouver. He received a groat eend-ofi'. Mr G. B. DaD Trent to Timaru this morning to take charge of the local post office during the absence on leave of Mr W. M'Hutcheson. In the event of Cr Lawrence's elevation to the mayoralty, Mr J. E. White, builder and a former Mayor of the N.E. Valley, will be a candidate for the vacant Leith Ward seat. The Methodist' Church, Port Chalmers, was crowded on Thursday evening, the occasion being a " golden •wedding social," tendered by the congregation to Mr and Mrs J. R. Monson andi Mr and Mrs C. Duke. The church was tastefully arranged and beautifully decorated. The Rev. J. Ward, who presided, spoke of the privilege conferred on the congregation in bemg allowed to so honor their friends. Mrs . Basire, one of the oldest members of the congregation, who had the day before celebrated the fifty-sixth anniversary of her wedding, assisted by Miss Gladys Barker, the grandi daughter of one of the donors of the church site, presented floral sprays to Mrs Monson and Mrs Duke. The Chairman, on behalf of the church, also presented to Mr and Mrs Monson a beautifully-bound copy of the Scriptures and New Methodist Hymn Book, and to Mr and Mrs Duke a copy of the recently-published 'Life of Hugh Price Hughes.' All the volumes bore the inscription in gold: " A golden wedding memento from the Methodist Church, Port Chalmers." A few days ago a report was about town to the effect that Miss May Cadtigan, who went to Europe to continue her study of music, had been compelled to give up pianoforte practice owing to nerve-weakness in the hands. Upon inquiry we learn that there Ls no authority for that rumor. In Miss Cado;ian's last letter to her parents she stated that at the end of last year-she was "run down," but at the time of writing she was much better after the Conservatorvnm vacation. Mr J. A. Seitz has bt>en selected as this year's Rhodes scholar for Victoria. At tho age of twenty-two he is at present one of the masters of the Caulfieid College. He began study at the Blackburn and Auburn State schools, attended.,the,Hawthorn College, afterwards won an entrance scholarship to the Scotch. College, where he •• took first class honors in mathematics at mairic. He next won a scholarship at the Ormond College, which he held for four years, faking the engineering course at the University. He made, a record of 195 runs at cricket for Ormobd; played the game against Sydney University, and in 1905 captained the University team'which took fourth place in metropolitan football. Mr Peter S. Hay has been gazetted as marine engineer for the colony. ' On .taking leave, of the District Court at Queenstowrl, Judge Ward was farewelled by members of the. local Bar.
