The Zealandia arrived at Dunedin yesterday morning after a good passage, in which clear weather with a moderate sea was the experience throughout. She sails to-morrow for Sydney via Auckland and usual East .Coast ports. Mr James Basire, chief engineer of the Mararoa, .has been appointed chief engineer cf the company's turbine steamer Loongana, which is in the MelbourneLaunceston trade. He left by the Warrimoo yesterday, to take up his new duties. . Mr Basire commenced as fifth engineer of the Mararoa. • # The Auckland Harbor Board give' notice that, owing to the. reconstruction of the railway wharf, the two red lights on tho east end of the wharf have been removed to a position 250 ft to the westward and near the wharf front. The Ripple, having been cleaned and painted, was floated out of the graving dock this afternoon. Union Company's big cargo boat, the Aparima, sails from Calcutta on April o for New Zealand via Singapore and Java. ilie Invercargfll is duo at Port Chalmers from Waikawa to-morrow morning, and comes up to Dunedin at mid-day with a cargo of timber, fibre, and cheese. She sails on Wednesday for Invercargill. The Storm arrives to-morrow morning, and leaves the same day for Oamaru, Tima.ru, Lytteiton, and Wanganui. The Ripple is .still at Port Chalmers. Alterations to her should be completed in about ton days' time, when she sails to Lytteiton, and thence to the Chatham Islands. The Squall is at Greymouih discharging a cargo of timber. the is due here about the 25th. Repairs to the Rose Casey are now completed, and stores arc being shipped. The vessel will be ready for sea by the end of the week, when she will again take up her running in the Southern trade. The Zealandia sails from Dunedin for Sydney' via. Auckland and intermediate East Coast ports at one o'clock to-morrow. The barque Pharos is expected any day. WRECK AT MALDEN ISLAND. AUCKLAND, March 18. The barque Alma was wrecked at Maiden Island on February 1. The vessel had arrived from Lytteiton, and had put out part of her ballast and took in about 150 tons of guano for Launceston. A gale came on from the north-west. The vessel dragged her anchors, ;tnd touched on the reef with her stem. The crew took to the boats and landed on the i. iind. The vessel shortly afterwards went down. The crew lost everything, and came to Auckland on Saturday in the barque Olive. A RECORD SHIPBUILDING YEAR. During 1905, exclusive of warships, 795 vesrefe, of 1,623,168 tons gross—namely 737 steamers of 1,604,796 tens and 58 sailers of 18,572 tans—were launched in the United Kingdom. The warship launched at both Government and private yards amounted to 28, of 129,801 tans damlacerrrent. The total output of the United Kingdom for the past year was, therefore, 823 vessels, of 1,752,969 tons. The output of mercantile tonnage in the United Kingdom during 1905 shows the great increase of 418,000 tons on that of 1904, and is the highest on record. A cable has been received reporting that the British steamer Asinconrt, from° Port Kembla to Hongkong with a cargo of 5,700 tons of coal, struck on an uncharted rock and beeanio a total wreck. A rumor has been current in commercial and shipping circles to the effect that the "Aberdeen" line of steamers is to be absorbed by the White Star Line. What appears to be authentic information is now to hand by mail concerning the matter. 'Fairplay,' under date February 1, writes as follows : It seems to be generally supposed' that the Morgan Combine have acquired an interest in the well-known Aberdeen Line (George Thompson and Co., Limited), which runs from London and Plymouth to' South Africa and Australia, as Mr Harold Arthur Sanderson, Liverpool, and Mr Edward Fletcher, also of Liverpool, and of the White Star line (which is owned by the combine) and Mr Walter Henry Savill, of the Shaw, Savill and Albion Line, have been appointed directors, in addition to Mr George Thompson Henderson. Thompson and Co., Limited (the Aberdeen Line), was formed into a limited company, with a capital of £150,000 in 6 per cent, preference shares of £1 each, £50,000 in ordinary preference shares of £lO each, and £50,000 in management shares of £1 each. The preference 0 shareholders have no voting power, nor any right to attend the ordinary meetings of the company,, while the holders of the management shares from 1 to 20,000 are to appoint two directors, one of whom is to be the chair™fs• °* tfl e company; shares 20,001 to 33,340 are to appoint one director; and shares 33,341 to 50,000 are to appoint another; so that the holders of the management shares have the absolute control of the company's affairs. In addition to the capital of £250,000 referred to above, the company have power to issue £300,000 of 4i per cent, first mortgage debentures, of which £250,000 have been or are issued.
