SPORTING INTELLIGENCE.

<»■■ - LADIES' CRICKET MATCH. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. MELBOURNE, March 19. (Received March 19, at 9.39 a.m.) The'first inter-State ladies' cricket match, Tasmania v. Victoria, drew a lan;e attendance. It proved an easy win ifor'the home team. After the disposal of the visitors for 49, the Victorians made 73 for the loss of four wickets. The Victorians adopted overarm and the visitors underarm bowling. During the past two years the relation* existing between the EJtham Axemen's Society (styled the New Zealand Axemen's Association) and the Southland Carnival Committee have been somewhat strained. The Eltham Society claim the lute control of the sport in New Zealand, and threaten unless the Southland Society affiliate and forward registration fees for competitors, to declare the Easter carnival an unregistered meeting. In the opinion of all those connected with the f?port in Southland the Eltham Society, who are registered as a joint stock company, are exhibiting an improper penchant in the direction of money-making. At a meeting at Invercargill on Saturday it was decided to invite the Eltham Society to confer as to tho advisability of forming an association to control future wood-chopping and sawing contests; in tho meantime, that the matter referred to the New Zealand Athletic Union, with a request that the latter should endeavor to arrange an equitable and amicable settlement.
