CITY POLICE COURT. (Before C. C. Graham, Esq., S-M-) l>runkenness.—A first offender was fined 5s with the usual alternative. Opium Cases.—Charles Chow was charged with having urdawfully smoked opium on March 11.—Mr Hanlon appeared for the accused, who pleaded nob guilty.—Sergeant King said that about 10.30 p.m. on the date mentioned Sergeant 'Mathieson and two constables, visiting the house occupied by Ah Chew, found the defendant with an ophim pipe in hi 3 mouth and a lighted lamp nest him. Possession was taken of the ashes of opium found, but no opium was actually found.—Sergeant Mathieson gave evidence that the house visited was in Walker street. The accused had tie pipe (produced) in hJS hand, and a needle in the other hand. The pipe was quite warm, and a slush lamp was burning. When charged, accused said that he was preparing a substitute for opium to satisfy bis craving. He seaebed the room for opium, but all he could find was a sort of opium ash.—Mr Hanlon, for the defnee, produced a wax-like substance, which he said was used as a substitue for opium, and might be smoked in an opium pipe. He submitted that there was no evidence whatever of opium being smoked.—rThe case was dismissed. The' police offerd no evidence in a case against Ah Chew of permitting the previous accused to smoke opium in the house occupied by' him. The casei was accordingly dismissed. By-law Cases.—Elizabeth Smith pleaded guilty to being the owner of<a cow found wandering at large at Ravensbourne. Defendant's husband offered an explanation, after which she was fined 5s and costs (7s). ——Ed.
