Jules Mothazet, a young French cavalry officer, has just been all but blinded by vitriol on his wedding day by a deserted sweetheart. Kdlle Gran j pan, the girl in question, learned the date of Mothazet’s marriage to her rival, end waited outside the church. As the bridgegroom stepped, from his carriage she confronted him, crying: “And am I not even to be invited to the wedding?” Before be could answer she produced a phial of vitriol filing it full in his face.
