TUAPEKA MINING NOTES. [By OnE Lawrence Correspondent.] The break in the weather last Wednesday and Thursday has been responsible, through the heavy snowfall, for the suspension. of sluicing operations in the Waipori district. The dredges driven by waterpower are also dosed down. There were fully 6in of snow on Waipori Flat, and on the high country there most have been from 15in to 18in. The accompanying heavy gnele of wind were responsible for causing the snow to drift, and in many places these drifts are several feet in depth. All the water races in consequence have been blocked, and several days mast elapse before the water supply will bo again equal to ordinary requirements. Concerning dredging matters in the same district, 1 hear that M'Neil and party got 61Aoz of gold for their week's work the Saturday before last. Last week's return was expected to be even better—between

1 70oz and 80oz. The ground the party are now working at one time formed part of the Oceanic dredge’s claim. The Lower Enfield dredge is reported to be still doing well, running from 18oz to 220z per week. The old Success dredge is still undergoing an overhaul. The Upper Waipori Company’s dredge has not doing so well for the past week or two, but'is almost certain to strike better wash before long. There is nothing out of the ordinary to note in relation to mining in the Waitahuna district. The Norwegian, Sailor’s Gully, and Waitahuna sluicing claims are all on good gold. The Havelock dredge is winning satisfactory returns, but the Imperial dredge is on very poor ground. At Wetherstooes the last wash-up of the Crescent Sluicing Company was 240z for the fortnight. The Golden Rise party arc, as usual, doing exceedingly well. The Local Industry Company are practically “ duffered-out ” in their claim at Wetherstones, and arc preparing to make a start on the claim they hold at' the foot of Gabriel Gully. The Bine Spur Consolidated Company are working away steadily, but the recent fall of snow has affected their water supply. Kit to and party are also in the same box, on account of the snowfall. I bear that Martin and party, known as the Tuapeka Sluicing Company, are on very good gold in Blue Jacket Gully. The principals in the Gore syndicate, who are constructing a water race from Gabriel Gully to work the terraces in the neighborhood of Docherty’s bridge, at Tuapeka Elat, were on the claim last week, and are in hopes of getting a start by the end of the current month. The work of constructing the race has proved a much heavier ana more costly undertaking than was at first anticipated. The settlement of the compensation claims for the right to carry the race through private property must have made inroads on a fairly decent bank balance. There has been a change in the management of the Taniwha dredge, Mr A. N. Wakefield giving place to Mr T. K. Weir, the senior winch man. Mr Wakefield is about to assume the control of the Tamiti Sluicing Company’s works. This company have in hand the building of a dam in Tuapeka Creek, about ten miles from Lawrence, from which water is to be raised wherewith to work the alluvial terrace formations that exist in the neighborhood. The Champion Company’s claim and water rights at the Beaumont have passed into other hands, and are to be carried on in future under the style of the Pluntct Gold Mining Company. Their intention, it is understood, ia to carry their water supply across the river, and there work ground that is said to be payably auriferous, and which m not beset with the difficulties that were met with at every turn in carrying on operations on the east bank of the river. The gold returns from the Tallabum Company’s claim continue to keep at a very high level. One week’s wash-up lately reached 48oz, and 50oz and 40o» returns are quite common. At Miller Elat and immediate neighborhood the Golden Run dredge now tops the list an easy first. Last, week’s 140oz return must give salisfction alike to the dredge-master and the directors, as well as the shareholders. The two Otagos keep on good gold : more so the No. 2 dredge. The troldcn Treasure dredge is also winning returns that are highly payable, but, at the same time they fall considerably below what was expected. The other dredges in the same locality are doing fairly well. There is nothing out of the way to note in tile gold returns of the dredges in tile Roxburgh direction. It is on the card that tin- Canadian Flat, toward the head of the Taieri River is to be thoroughly prospected with the aid of boring rods at an early dato. Mr i’al. Laffey’s name is associated with the venture. Many of the old miners acquainted with that pari, of the conntry cling to the belief that bigblv-pavahlc gold will be found there. ' There is a report in circulation that the Rise and Rhine claim, on the Pomahaku River across the hills from Roxburgh, is to get a further trial this summer. A. good deal of Roxburgh money off and on has been spent in that neighborhood, but the results up to the pres'’lit have not been satisfactory.
