THE NEW CONTRACT CONDITIONS

Mr F. Wilkinson, secretary of the Builders’ Association, writes:—‘ Now Unit this matter has been made public, and the secretary of the Institute of Architects inis been good enough to give you wbat beseems to consider a correct account of the difference between, the architects and builders, we also wish to give you our version of the whole matter. You will notice how the secretary of the Institute of Architects evades the main question at issue—namely, the question of a conference to discuss the new conditions. As you st-c in your issue of Saturday, the architects are agreed ’that a uniform net of conditions is desirable provided thev are fair and just to all parties.’ Such a set of conditions wo. the Federated Builders of New Zealand; claim to have drawn up. Now comes the crux of the whole dispute. A copy of the conditions was forwarded to the architects in tlm various centres of the colony in February last, with the intimation that the builders would be willing to meet them in conference on a dale to be fixed us early apossible by the architects, to obtain from them an expression of opinion on the conditions submitted. The whole burden of the song of the architects' secretary is that the builders refused a conference. We append copies of Vetters forwarded to him from time to time, which speak for themselves. To these letters we received no reply until wit bin a few weeks of the date of the builders' animal conference, to be held this month. Then Hie architects wake up. and at once fly to the Press with ,i

griorenoe, and pßib ‘smjpa'’ tidwil hew and there from the asr .ecodSbont : Of these it is not oar intaitkio t» take notice, but even at this hd» stage a conference is quite feasible, and if such is arranged we are prepared to meet the architects in a fair and open manner. No doubt if each a conference takes place on amicable settlement will he the result. Then wflX be tie time to give the Press the foil teat for publication, and throughout the length and breadth of the colony' if so desired. Dunedin, February 15, 1905. To J. L. Salmond, Esq., hon. secretary Architects’ Institute. Dear sir,—l have been instructed to forward copy of colonial conditions, as Irawn up by the Federal Council of _ New Zealand Builders, to you. for the consideration of your Institute, and, alter perusal of ■.nine, as soon us possible I will appoint a conference of builders to meet year members to hear anything which may crop up regarding same. —Yours faithfully (signed), R C Torranck, Secretary.
