A thousand Armenians and workmen seized the hospital at Balakbany, in the Baku district. They ignored a summons to sttweoder, and killed one of the Russian gunners. The troops then opened fire, aad three guns sent shells clashing into the hospital, killing many inside. The Armenians quitted their cover, and, assailing the gunners with boiling oil, captured the guns under cover of the smoke, and temporarily repelled the Cossacks. The infantry, who were approaching, recaptured the guns. All the Britishers at Baku are safe aboard a steamer. Four, however, who are foodless and waterless, are surrounded by Tartars at Balakhanr. It is feared that they have perished in the flames. A partial pacification of the outbreak at Baku was effected. Reinforcements have arrived, also a supply of bread. Reinforcements have been sent to Shusba. APPALLING STORIES. SLAUGHTERAND HAVOC. ST. PETERSBURG. September 9. Despite reassuring official messages, private telegrams report a wholesale- massacre of Armenians. Four hundred of them were hemmed in a courtyard in a suburb of Baku. They sent a frantic request to,the Governor for assistance, but it was- not forthcoming, and all were killed by the Tartars.
In the villages of Duduktchu, Achilla, Akbttraes, and Chaxmantohi, in the Government of Efisabethpol, a» large proportion of the inhabitants wer<» put to death, and the rest fled. All the houses were plundered and burned. Thousands of Tartars are besieging the Armenians at Zabrata.
