[From an Occasiohal Cobbespomhsnt^ There is ;i good deal of life and stir in mining circles in the Wadkaia district at the present time. Nearly all dredges ait work there are winning higiuypayable returns, and the money that is circulated in dividends every month must run into a very substantial amount. One or two of the sluicing claims are afao said to bo doing well, and more attention is to be given to thie branch of mining. It is currenily reported that Messrs P. Gordon and party, who recently starteu. sinking in the gully off Garvey Barn, at the spot where the Garryowen dDedgo knocked off, got splendid gold below the false bottom worked by the dredge and previously worked by tie Chinese. Unfoirtunaitely. the party's water race is at a low levol, and, with a comparatively trifling pressure, this is against either sinking to ;tny depth or elevating to any i height. The party have under consideration the bringing in of an adequate supply of water from the Dome Creek. This will necessitate the construction of several miles of ditching and fhnning and about lour miles of iron piping, which will afford splendid pressure. The cost is set down at between £13,000 and The water race will command a very large area of proved auriferous country, and the " spec" is generally regarded by those competent to express an opinion as a really good one. Some years ago Mwasrs Hainer I and: party took the levels of fcne proposed race, and were prepared to bring in the water if the Government would assist in providing money for tihe lineof pipes. The Government of the day did not see their way to render a/ny material assistance, and the scheme was 'allowed to fall through. Mr Gordon, however, with chaxacterJEtto | enterprise, backed up by a number of his Bußedin friends, is determined to take the race in hand and push it through. The application of Messrs Bertram and party for a water rigfat aad prospecting aeea at tie Rob Roy diggings came before the Warden's Coart at Waikaia on Tuesday last, and was struck out, ae fi. was discovered that the diggings were outside the goklfieids area. Steps are now being token to have the Rob Roy comriay proclaimed a mining reserve, and as soon as; this is done Messrs Bertram and party! will renew their a-^ticatKi. The Duke of Gordon dredge still holds Hie premier position on the Waikaia fieki as a .gold-winner. The weekly netnsroa are in hhe neighborhood of 80oz and lOOoz, and sometimes the quantity of gold represented by these figures is doubled. Ihave it on very good authority that the dredge has averaged over 90oz per week since tie beginning of Uie year. The Masterton dredge comes next to. the Duke of Gordon as a gold-winner. Her last return was lOloz for 182 hoare' dredging, winch gives substantial proof that the claim carries rich gold. The directors have declared a 2s dividend, making the seventh, of the aggregate value of 18a> per share. The Mystery Flat dredge and also the Hessey dredge are regular and consistent gold-winners. Both have claime wilt a, considerable "-life," which means good seJ-, turns to the fortunate inv«etors. The Argyle dredge, which is driven by water, is also doing well. The returns run from 30oz to 350z per week, which leaves a big margin of profit, as it » reckoned that about soz per week pays all expenses. . The Waikaia dredge has been stowing up for some time as a gaktpßodacer, with every prospect of bigger returns ere long. I bear the company have pegged off another claim adjoining (down stream) their present holding. The hastiest of iD-mck seems to attend the Fairdown dredge. She had no sooner got to work in earnest and in the neighborhood of highly-payable gold when the bailings elevator coUxpsed very suddenly, snappmg like a carrot close to the stem of the d*edge. The Lady Anne dredge conta«H)« to win payable returns, bot these are not as heavy as formerly. The same remark applies to the Lady Gordon dredge, also in the same neMAorimod. The Kia-ora dredge is idle, awaiting a bottom tumbler. Her last return was 16oz odd. The Mndsry, Creek dredge keeps on good gold, witii every likelihood of continuing for zmuay a day. The Nugent Wood dnedge has barely paid expenses for some weeks, and I understand she has been closed down pending a meeting of shareholders' to decide as to bar fatare. . Slow progress is bang made with the Magnum Bonnm dredge (formerly the Garryowen), which is to work on Mnddy Creek, about one mile and a-half below the Muddy Creek dredge. It is reported that a Port Ghahnera £e«tlamaa»-<afr>*i&rverjjr latgßfe-irsurutut

in dredging,' has secured options over tew froehoid properties in the vicinity of the Duke of Gordon and Waikaia dredging claims, and that he has made arrangemente to have same prospected at an early date. . There is some talk of a company being promoted to put a dredge on the okt Switzers claim, which extends from above the traffic bridge over the Waikaia River aad in the direction of the Hessey dredging claim,
