MORNINGTON CRICKET CLUB

The report of the Morning ton Cricket | Club, to be presented at the. first annual meeting of the chib on Thursday, the 14-tc , mat., is summarised below : The Committee congratulate mem bare on their success in both third and fourth grades in their first year. The third grade team were successful in carrying off the shield with a record of 16 matches played, 34 of which were won, X lost, and 1 drawn, while the number of championship points scored was 20 j. All the timbers in this competition, displayed consistent idem, especially D. Mason, in batting, with an average of SO runs, and J. Clarke with an. average of 24 runs. The bowling average was secured by H. M'Farlane, who bowled renvarkebbly well, -while I>. Mason, H. Webb, and D. Stalker gave good support. A word of praise is due to this team for their efforts in the field. In the fourth grade competition No. 2 and No. 1 teams were second and fourth respectively, which is highly satisfactory, in view of the fact that a number of the players had rto previous experience in cricket. It was their keenness and enthusiasm that placed them so well up on the list. No. 2 team played 16 match s; won 12, and lost 4, scoring 19 flag points. W. Nelson, M. Caradus, and G. Hurston were most successful with the bat, while J. Canute, G. Hurston, and J. Gar-side did good work with the ball. No. 1 also did well, considering they bod on many occasions to suffer loss by members of the teams being withdrawn to fill vacancies in the other teams. Of 17 matches nlayod, 9 were won and 8 lost, 16 flag points being scored. In batting, D. Scott, G. Watt, and R. Notmari were most successful. J. Bohm, J. Nioolson, and W. Smith secured the best bowling averages. The Committee would like to impress upon 'members the necessity of steady practice. The attendance at practice during the past season, while being good, could be improved upon, and the Committee trust members will turn out more regularly during the forthcoming season. A match was played at Shag Po nt against a local eleven, and a very enjoyable game resulted in a win for Morningtom. The kindness of the country team was much appreciated, and it is intended to try and make the fixture annual. Being thie club’s first year, nat/u rally heavy expenses, such as procuring all material, etc., had to bo incurred, and this has been a draw upon the finances. However, tho financial position must be regarded os. satisfactory, and during the coming season the Committee look forward to further strengthening the club's position. Active steps were taken during tho year to raise money for the purpose of erecting a pavilion, and with that in view two concerts were hold, resulting in a good- sum being collected. To further the movement it is the intention of the club td hold a bazaar early next year, in conjunction with the Momington Brass Band, and it is confidently expected that sufficient funds will then be raised to enable the building to be erected. The Committee trust that members will recognise the necessity of such pavilion, and afford all the support in their power. The thanks of the club are due to those gentlemen who so generously assisted by giving donations, and to those who officiated as umpires and scorers.
