Deceased, who was unmarried, was a keen bowler, having for a ' long time been connected with the Dunedin | Green, and aiterwards transferring his allegiance to the Port Chalmers Green, of ; which ho was one of tlie founders. We I have heard Captain Lloyd say that, he once dibbled in journalism, haying joined Messrs j Heed and Brett in the ' Auckland Star ' when that now well-established paper was on a veiy insecure footing, and that be was frightened out of what has since proved to | be one of the finest newspaper properties j in tho colony by his want of faith in the l future of .Auckland city and province. Mr J. Duncan Harris, manager of Hillside Workshops, who has been promoted to the North Island, was furewelled by the shop employees last evening. Mr John Carson, who presided, made a becoming speech, in which he voiced the good feeling and the regret stimulated in ail his associates by Mr Harris's departure. Mr B. Dewsbury, an old Christchureh resident, aged sixty-seven, died on Thursday. The Hon. Elihu Root, ex-Secretary cf War, succeeds the late Mr Hay as Chief Secretary of State. Mr Andrew Thomson, who died on_ Thursday at the age of sixty-four, wag one of the oldest members of the Dunedjn Bowling Olub, and skipped one of the rinks in the first intercolonial match played at Melbourne in tie Exhibition jear (1888).
