AMUSEMENTS.
THE WOODS-WILLIAMSON COMPANY. The once well-known comedy ‘Pygmalion and Galatea,’ by the brilliant librettest Gilbert, was produced for one night only at His Majesty’s Theatre last evening. Many of those who attended witnessed it for the first time, and from the ready response of the audience to the humor and pathos of the comedy, especially during the second act, it may confidently be said to have held their absorbed attention. The performance all round was a satisfactory one, some of the characters receiving excellent representation. Miss Maud WilliamBOn ,y as 33 Galatea, and despite a troublesome cold gave an artistic and convincing interpretation of the part. Mr Alfred Woods, as Pygmalion, looked and acted well the personification of the Greek Ecuiptor. Air H. Douglas was very happy m the broad humor of Chrysoa, and the other members of the company included in the cast were Alisses A. Holrovd, 0. Doyle and M. Morton, with Messrs 0. Bryant, j’ A- Lambert* and P. Savieri. __To-night the company appear in ‘ \ Womanfs Sin,’ founded on Hall Chine’s work Ibe Manxman,’ and on Friday evening The New Magdalene’ will be staged, Xhe season closes on Saturday.
PRINCESS’S THEATRE, The drama ‘Through the Divorce Court ’ was again presented at the Princess’s lost night, the various emotional scenes being portrayed m a maimer which proved thoroughly satisfactory to the very large audience present. ‘Through the Divorce Court will oe played again this evening. HARRY PEARCE’S BENEFIT. Tim local Committee who had arranged a benefit performance at the Alhambra Theatre last evening on behalf of MrJßarry Pearce, a well-known wrestler froitiVAnst rail a, incapacitated for. some weeks owing to injuries, sustained in a bout with Mr hi Powley, had the satisfaction . of finding their efforts rewarded by a very large “ house.” The programme included vocal items by Messrs A. Sutherland, T.' Flynn, JB. Stevens, W. Sylvain, Cljas. Bryant, W.
Wilhelmson, and P. Moody; rqcitationsby Messrs Arthur'CSarke, Stirling White, and P. J. Barry juggling ,by the Eexton brothers; a violin solo by Mr A. MacDonnell; and club awinging by Mr F. Whitlow. Son> derhofs Band contributed' a couple of overture*. The. wrestling bout in ; the Catcltias-catoh-can style between Messrs M. Powley and D. MfLaren resulted in a win for the former, who - secured two out ’of -three falls. Pearce, in thanking all andsundry for their assistance, stated; that He intended to return to Australia, but, remembering their kindness to him, he would always have a warm comer in his heart for New Zealand. An announcement that the Scottish athletes (Messrs A; A. Cameron and G. Johnstone) were unable to attend was received with marks of disapproval.
