SPORTING INTELLIGENCE

AJ.C. AUTUMN MEETING. Gladsome cannot be accounted a stayer. She was tried at Randwick on Saturday for the first time beyond a mile and a-half, and failed badly. The public sent her out a better favorite than Lord Cardigan, who, as the winner of the Randwick Plate (3m) and tho Melbourne and Sydney Cups, was a proved stayer. This shows how the New Zealand mare in her previous race impressed the Sydney racegoers. Elvo (6.12) won the Place Handicap, in 2min 40sec, by a neck from Mallard (8.1). Signet accounted for the Second Steeplechase, and Jim Dorset appropriated the Nursery Handicap. The Final Handicap went to the light weight Diamonds (6.7), who defeated Ironmould (7.13) by a short neck. There were nineteen starters, and the mile and ivquarter ■was negotiated in 2mia 10 j sec. The three-year-olds, Lord Cardigan, Gladsome, and Belch, were the only starters for the A.J.C. Plate, of 600 sovs (second 120 sovs and third 60 sovs), w.f.a., three miles. The betting was 6 to 4 against Gladsome. 7. to 4 Lord Cardigan, sto 2 Belah. Lord Cardigan was tho first to move, followed by Gladsome and Belah in that order. Belah led Lord Cardigan by a head past the stand, with Gladsome six lengths away. The positions were maintained into the straight a second time, with the exception that Gladsome ran to within a lengtii and a-half of Belah. Leaving the straight a second time, Lord Cardigan just led Belah, with Gladsome a length behind. At the back Belah ran up to Lord Cardigan, with Gladsome two lengths away. At the halfmile Lord Cardigan left Belah, and. Gladsome being done with, won easily by four lengths. Belah beat Gladsome by twenty lengths. Time, smin 26isec.
