FOOTBALL

THE ENGLLSHAIEN'S YWL WELI.INGTON, April 7. Owing to the excessive amount (£1,500) required by the New South Wales Union for the English football team to tonr the colony, the New Zealand Union are endeavoring to arrange direct with the Englishmen for a visit.

M. E. Wood, tie well-known footballer, who acted a* deputy-captain of last year's New Zealand team, wis married on Easter Monday, and is Christchureh for Auckland, to which city ne has been transferred.

A letter was received in Christchureh by the last San Francisco mail from "A. B. O'Brien, the old Christchureh High School player, stating that he and P. late of Wanganui, both of whom are at present at Guy's Hospital, Londonj had uten invited to join the English Rugby team who are to visit Australia during the coming season. The writer says that, provided terms ron be arranged, i; is nearly ce-fiin that the team will visit New Zealand. There is some doubt whether M'Evedy will make the trip, and O'Brien was also uncertain if he could come. It is to be hoped (says a Christchureh writer) that the Canterbury and Otago Rugby Unions will hold ah inquiry into tne alleged misbehaviour of members of football tints under their control whilst travel bug on t're night expresses on Thursday last. If the facts as stated are correct, it is about time that the governing bodies of thd sport dealt with the matter in a drastic manner, so as to teach those players who cause annoyance and bring the sport into disrepute a severe lesson.
