EDUCATIONAL CONFERENCE.

SYDNEY, April 6. An educational conference, which was attended by teachers of State schools and other educational authorities, discussed at great length the report presented by the Commissioners who last year visited Europe. The departmental officials strongly supported the present system of pupil teachers, but outside experts supported the Commissioners' conclusions. Ultimately a resolution in the nature of a compromise was carried favoring the abolition of the pupil teacher system, but recommending that steps be taken immediately to modify and improve the conditions of pupil teachers' service. It was also resolved that it is inadvisable to establish a Chair of Pedagogy at the Sydney University, but that the proposed Professor of Education should be ex officio director of a training college to be associated with the University.
