SPORTING INTELLIGENCE.

CANTERBURY RACES.

[Ee.im Cue Own Repoexee.]

CHRISTCHURCH, April 6.

The autumn meeting of the C.J.C. was continued yesterday under anything but favorable conditions climatically. It was raining hard when proceedings commenced, and there was very little prospect of its clearing. Fortunately, however, the weather lifted somewhat after the first race, and although there was another heavy shower just after the Autumn Handicap was run, the afternoon generally remained nothing worse than dull. The rain, of course, affected the going, which was heavy all day. The racing, nevertheless, was of an excellent character.

Proceedings opened with the hurdle race, from which Levant and Scottish Minstrel were withdrawn. On the strength of his first day’s running, and in a flattering handicap, Phaetontis was well backed, "along with Zealous, whose form had not been dis° closed on the previous day, owing to his having fallen at the first fence. In the race itself Zealous never looked dangerous, and Phaetontis, pecking hard at Cutts’s fence, lost his chance, Catherine Gordon, who was comparatively overlooked in the betting, from that out making no race of it, and winning with a good lot in hand ’ from Roller, with Phaetontis third.

In the Autumn Nursery Stead’s pair— Golden Lily and Rubia—were naturally made favorites, though Chryseis and Ailsa. were also well backed. This* time the Yaldhurst stable made no mistake, for the two were in front turning into the straight proper, and were never troubled, Golden Lily winning -from Rubia by half a head in the last few strides, though the would have been reversed had Rubia been ridden out. Ailsa ran disappointingly, but nothing had any chance with the winners. The Yaldhurst Welter unexpectedly fell to Djin Djin, who was favored by the going, and beat Blackstone fairly and squarely in an honest run home from the half-distance. Ragabrash, wbjo was favorite, would probably have troubled the leaders had Hewitt not got shut in in trying to bring her up on the rails. Nothing else ran prominently.

The Autumn Handicap found Grand Rapids, who has improved out of sight, and was by far the most tradesmanlike horse in the race, going out a strong favorite, Buluwayo being next in demand. The pony made all his own running, and won fairly easily at the finish from the favorite. The surprised the race was Welbeck, who, although comparatively green, made a strong run from the back at the finish, and wound up close to the lenders. Considering the state of the course, the time (2min 36£ sec) was remarkably good.- Red Gauntlet finished last, and Canteen never flattered hii supporters.

Ihe Twelfth Challenge Stakes was a good betting race among the three stables represented. It was thought that the weather would militate against Machine Gun, whilst Martian’s chance was very little thought cf This made Sir George Clifford’s .bradtet— Treadmill and Stronghold—almost as well backed as the Yaldhurst pair, whilst there was also good money for Zetland. The race was run fairly strongly. Treadmill and Mar-

tian occupying the rear position until the distance, when Martian put in a strong run, and, coming on, won very easily from Treadmill. The victory was received with a strong demonstration of disapproval, due to the celt’s ungenerous showing in the Easter Handicap. The demonstration, indeed, was one of the most pronounced ever seen on the Riccarton course.

Petrovna scored easily at the right end of the Templeton Handicap, but Lady Lillian and Vladimir got all the worst of a straggling start, or the result might have beat different.

Quickfire easily accounted for the Addington Plate, and in the Final Handicap, which was a fine betting race, the disappointing Secret Service scored his first win on the Riccarton course for his owner. Blackstone was the absolute favorite, but he never looked dangerous. The totalizator investments for the meeting amounted to £23,671 ss, or £852 5s more than last year.
