UNIVERSITY CARNIVAL

MARINE EXCUXRSTON TO PORTOBELLO. The programme of the inter-university carnival was continued yesterday afternoon in the shape of a marine excursion to Portobello to the visitors, given by the Otago students. Through the kindness of Mr James Mills the three launches of the Union St am Ship Company were placed at the disposal of the students, and a start was made from the Rattray street wharf at 3.30 p.m. The rain, which had somewhat damped things at the tennis in the morning, cleared off, and a most pleasant trip was made down the harbor, the d stinaton being reached about 5 p.m. The School Hall was at once occupied, and tea dispensed by the ladies of the local University. As the ground was rather damp, further excursion into the neighboring hills was deemed inadvisable, and an impromptu concert was organised by Messrs A. E. Baron and O’Kane, in which the talent available was called into requisition. About nine o’clock a start was made for home, Dunedin being reached about eleven o’clock. All the arrangements were adequately carried out, and everybody seemed to be having a good time. Special thanks are due to Captain Strang for the superintendence of the boats and for his attention to the welfare of the occupants by the liberal supply of rugs. INTER-UNIVERSITY TENNIS.
