THE TRADES COUNCIL.
CHRISTCHURCH, April 6. The Herr Zealand Trades Council ConferGnce resumed their sittings this morning. Mr J. Barr (Canterbury) moved that the Workers' Compensation Act be amended to provide full pay from the time of accident on the basis of current wages ruling in the district. Mr H. Betts (Westland) moved as an amendment that the Act be amended to provide that in the case of injury the employee receive 50 per cent, of his ordinary weekly, daily, or hourly wane, as the case might- be, and that compensation be computed as if at the time of the injuries the worker was in the service of his employer for one or more weeks. Mr J. R,‘ Cole (Hawke’s Bay) gave notice of a second amendment providing for compensation at the full rate of pay under the same conditions regarding time as was proposed by Mr Betts. The voting on the first amendment wets equal, and it was declared lost. The second amendment wm also lost by one vote, and the original motion was carried unanimously. It was agreed to urge the Government to amend the Act in the direction of making it legal for unions to - sue for compensation on behalf of persons injured. It was also decided that power should be extended to the employer to make application for a lump sum in case of permanent injury, and that the maximum compensation recoverable under the Act should be raised from £3OO to £6OO. It was resolved that the Government be urged to make provision by which risks declined by other accident insurance companies through partial disablement should be insured under special arrangements with the jQoyeriHiWMt Insurance ,
