( That Mr Williamson’s Royal Comic Opera Company have a most profitable season before them was again evidenced last night, when His Majesty’s Theatre was packed both upstairs and downstairs. The second production of ‘A Country Girl’ passed off with even greater success than on the opening night. The superb staging of the piece and the excellent work of the principals were again two features in the performance that won the highest praise from the audience, who were most enthusiastic and appreciative throughout the whole evening’s entertainment. ‘A Country Girl’ is essentially a pretty opera, and undoubtedly one of the finest productions of its kind ever seen on the local stage. Its many catchy musical numbers kept everybody in a happy frame of mind, and encores were frequently insisted upon. Miss Florence Young as (Marjory won golden opinions for her capable acting and pleasing vocal work. Her rendering of ‘ The cooing song ’ was, perhaps, one of her best efforts. Mr George Lauri as Barry was as funny as ever. One of Its greatest successes was in his lecture on ‘Man,’ given whilst assuming the part cf an elderly lady. He received able support from Mr Claude Bantock, whose humorous songs fairly “ caught on. ” Miss Evelyn Scott acted and sang with distinct success, her songs ‘ Johnny came from London town’ and ‘ Molly the marchioness ’ being well received. Miss Celia Ghiloni is also a capable actress, and a singer of no mean order. Mr Haigh Jackson, Miss Maud Chetwynd, Mr Reginald Roberts, Mr Arthur Hunter, and Mr Maurice Dudley also lent valuable assistance. The charming quartet aud dance ‘ Take your pretty partner for the ball ’ bad to be repented several times. The striking and picturesque costumes were again generally admired. ‘ A Country Girl ’ will be repeated this and the two following nights, ‘Ma Mie Rosette’ being announced for Saturday night.
