Mr C. R. C. Robieson, chief clerk, is to have charge of the Tourist Department during Mr T. E. Donne’s absence at the St. Louis Exposition. Mr H. Gribben, late superintendent of the Seaview Asylum, was tendered a farewell social at Hokitika last evening, on his retirement from active duties and prior to his departure for the Old Country. At last night’s meeting of the West Harbor Borough Council the councillors unanimously decided to ask Mr F. G. Cray to stand for the office of mayor for a third term. It is regarded as unlikely that any. one will oppose Mr Cray’s candidature if lie agrees to seek re-election. The councillors also decided to take steps to suitably recognise the present mayor’s services to the borough. After the service on Sunday afternoon in the Leith Valiev Schoolroom Mr R. Steers, who is leaving the district, was the recipient of an inkstand and fountain pen, which bore the following inscription:—“ Presented to Mr R. Steers as a token of esteem from the Leith Valley Presbyterian Church choir ” Mr Steers has been choirmaster and conductor for some years past. Mr Aaskoy made the presentation. A Wellington message says that Sir Joseph Ward will represent the Government at the farewell to Lord Ranfurly at Dunedin.
