Courtis, city gas engineer, wrote under date 2nd October: " I hrivc for some considerable time had occasion To ccmplain of the indifferent maimer in which., your contract for street lighting has been.. carried out, have made proposals 10 the previous town clerk -with. & view to remedying tho defect. However, I see- you. have appointed a, new and younger lamplighter, and I am quite •.rilling to see Invar the new appointment is carried oat beforemoving further in the direction I suggested. ... I have to ask you to sea that yoar lamplighter faithfully carries ocr. the terms of agreement. e —The Gas Committee having no recommendation, to mak-;.-. the letter was received.
The district manager Government Insurance Depaxtmenfc wrote: "With reieietiee to your report of the injury to Alfred K««:,i, I am directed by the head office to inform you that the commissioner is unable to s-. e how accident compensation should be payable."—The Mayor explained that no mcilleal certificate was forthcoming, and that, was the cause of the stick-up.—BesoLv-cd to feave the matter in the hands of the ioi\u clerk.
Mr W. Bragg, -writing on the 15tli. acknowledging the Coancdl's letter of the IZih October, stated that he never requested the Conncdl to purchase his land in Main strew.. Ha simply asked {or a permit to baild and. to that had received no reply. Ho had incurred considerable expense in. fiiiing-m, purchase of material, wages. etc_ and thought he "was entitled to an immediate reply.—lt was resolved to consider the .matter in committee.
The Finance Cbmmittee recommend-etl that certain accounts be passed for parment, and reported that the balances of tAs several accounts -were: General, dr., £666 17s 7d ; vrater, cr., £ll7 lis 6d; sanitarv, cr., £B2; interest, dr_, £897 6s 2d.; general lean, ex., £524 Is 7d ; water works redemption loan, cr., £55 10s.—Adopted. The Works Oommittee recommended thac the footpaths in Nicholson street, Basse!! street, bullivan's avenue, Braemar street, Eoss street, and Fox road 0e kerbed, mad a up, and screened.—Adopted. Mr E. Wiggins, sanitary contractor, reported that one of the horses was gjike lame, needing a spell, and it wu? decided to authorise Cr Fleming and Mr Wiggins to buy another. Inspector Kerr reported as to the works in progress and completed, and added that on account of residents removing the best of the road scrapings he was unable- to keep the tip properly covered.
