CHESS
OTAGO v. TTMARU. The chess season was opened on Saturday l night, when a match by telegraph took 1 place between representatives of the Otago and, Timaru Clubs. The local players assembled in the club rooms, Liverpool street. 1 The match was twelve men a side, and the players were as follow I Otago. Timaru. I D. Forsyth v. B. Mason Dr W. Heinemann v. T. P. Wood |G. Barclay v. G. Jackman jW. Mills v. G. Bowker jT. Meekison v. T. Quinn I Mr J. Crow (president of the Otago ! Chess Club) umpired for Timaru in Dun- [ edin, and Mr J. Collins for Otago in Timaru, while Messrs J. H. F. Hamel, J. L. Flint, and P. Lyders officiated as scrutineers over the local representatives’ play. None of the games were finished when moves were sealed up at 11.50 p.m. So far tlv> games of Meekison v. Quinn and Mills v. Bowker appear to bo in favor of Otago, while Houghton v. Mara is in a stage advantageous to Timaru. The other games have been contested with marked caution, and are hardly sufficiently developed to permit of any opinion being expressed as to the probable result. The match will be resumed next Saturday evening, at seven o’clock.
