The Talune sailed this afternoon for Auckland via way ports to connect with the Waikare for Sydney. The Aparima left the George street pier yesterday evening for the Bluff. The Mararoa is receiving her periodical overhaul at the George street pier. The Rimu (from Wanganui), Corinna (from Northern ports), and the Janet Nicoll (from Westport) arrived to-day. The London ' Shipping Gazette-' believes that the Peninsular and Oriental Company will shortly make Southampton, instead of London, their Home port, owing to deeper water. ,

Captain D. R. Cooper, who died at Auckland ths other day at the age of sixty-one years, was (says a contemporary) a shipmaster well known in most Australasian ports. Deceased first came to Auckland as an officer of a sailing ship, and entered the pilot service in that harbor. He afterwards went to sea again as master of several vessels. At one time he waa owner of the trim little schoocer Welcome, and later of the Clansman. Selling her, he became part owner of the barque Woosung, in which he finished his sea-going days. His illness assumed a serious form a week or two ago, when his doctors advised an operation. This was performed, but deceased slowly sank, and passed away. A widow and grown-up fumflv survive him.

The Moura, from Fiji and Northern ports, arrived last evening. She experienced 'bad weather on the round trip, the passage from Auckland to Fiji having been marked by veiy stormy weather, whilst on the return voyage she fell in with the heavy westeriy gale which had been prevailing on the coast. WESTPORT HARBOR, The silting of the Westport bar has given birth to another problem (eays a contemporary). Tho colliers Pokaki, Taieri, Oorinna, and Selsdon are all too deeply loaded to cross.' It has been decided to discharge large quantities of coal from the first three named, but it is not known whether the Selsdon will be lightened or wait for favorable conditions. THE FIRE ON THE APARIMA. It appears that in spite of the water that was poured upon the bonedust which was on fire on board the Aparima Yerv little - actual damage was done. The following analysis was made by Mr Bickerton, public analyst, Chratchurch, of the samples sub-

nutted to him:—No. 1 sample was nob damaged by sea water j No. 2 sample was suppo«d to be damaged by sea water:— No.l. No. 2. Per Per . cent. cent. Moisture ... 6.90 ... 7.00 Organic matter ... « . 29.95 ... 29.85 rri-calcio-phosphate... ... ■*45.00 ... 44.20 Insoluble matter 2.20 ... 2!oO Carb. of lime and salts.:. 12.95 ... 15.95

■Total ... 100.00 ... 100.00 Professor Bickerton adds that there was nothing in the above results to show that either sample had been damaged;, the slight differences between them might'occur in any two samples of the same undamaged bonedust. TO-MORROW'S STEAMERS. The .Corinna is advertised to sail tomorrow afternoon for the West Coast via' Timaru and Wellington. The Rimu is timed to sail to-morrow afternoon for Invercargill. THE DUKE OF SUTHERLAND. BRISBANE, September" 29.—The s.?». Duke of Sutherland has been floated. The damage is not serions. ANOTHER VESSEL IN DISTRESS OFF GISBORNE. GISBORNE, September 30.—Purehau station, ten miles north of Gisborne, reports sighting a large vessel with onlv one mast standing and a topsail and jib set headinsouta. ' Later, lne steamer Beatrice left port at 9.30 tojeommunicate with the vessel sighted off Turehau. She is described as a large barque. Only the foremast is standing. Her position is about twelve miles off shore, near the Ariel reef. A light northeasterly wind is Wowing. The vessel appears to have some difficulty in steering. It is thought she may be the overdue Timaru.

The dredge John Townley left to search for the disabled ship at noon, taking provisions, and the steamer Fannv left at 2 p.m.

[These repeated appearances of vessels in disiress are becoming quite mysterious. Our readers will remember the accounts published a little while ago of the burning barque which appeared at night off the coast near Gisborne, and then disappeared, and how it was* at the time thought that this must be the overdue barque Timaru. Conjecture is of little value, but at the same time the possibility of some connection existing between these two unknown shins seems not unreasonable. As to the theory °f-n u- Timaru bein " m that vicinitv, we still think it unlikelv, as her course was along the other coast of the island.] SHIPPING TELEGRAMS.
