CHRISTCHURCH, September 26. The work of building the transepts of the Cathedral is nearly completed, and a vigorous effort is being made to collect a sufficient sum to finish the chancel. The chapter has agreed that if £3,500 is guaranteed it will recommend to the Synod next month a scheme by which a tender for the latter work can be accepted. Such a course would save £I,OOO on the contract, and would make available, in addition, some £650 winch was promised on the understanding that the whole work is put in hand. A canvass during the past week has resulted in another £SOO being promised, and it is likely that the whole sum will be in hand soon.
