Maojti Ihu.. —Last night’s meeting of the Maori Hill Borough Council was attended by the Mayor, Cn Bilking ton, Grant, Crowther, Smith, Booth, and Aaskoy,—A petition was received from J. 0. Thomson and nineteen other ratepayers asking for certain repairs and works, including gas or electric lights along Newington road, the filling up of an old drain on a property adjoining Mr Wheeler’s, and (with the combined action of the City Corporation) the widening of Newington road from the Queen’s drive to its junction with Chapman's road, leading to Nevada. After some little discussion it was decided to receive the petition, and the olerk was instructed to write to the petitioners to the effect that the Council could not. see their way to carry out the work on the Town Belt; and ae regards the lights, the matter rested with the petitioners, as if (hey had gas laid into their houses the City Corporation would in all probability put down a main; and that the street kerbing and channelling would be carried out as soon as possible.—The District Health Officer wrote stating that it had been brought under his notice that (he Council were depositing rubbish of an offensive nature in a gully near Henry street, and that the deposit was causing annoyance to householders. As all aueh deposits were nuisances aqd constituted danger to health, unless very carefully conducted, he asked the Council to either forthwith cease using tho place as a rubbish tiji or to provide a sufficiency of rich soil to cover the rubbish at least din. and that the rubbish should be covered with the soil immediately it iras deposited. The action of the clerk, who had immediately given instructions to have the rubbish covered regularly and efficiently, as required by Dr Ogston; was approved.— M. O'Brien, D. Bracks, and D. Henderson wrote protesting against the depositing of rubbish by the Council at the side of the mad way below their dwellings. The Clerk repotted that similar steps hod been taken iu this case.—P. K. Sargood asked leave to remove a few loads of stone from a quarry on a road-lino near his property, which quarry he had hitherto believed to be on his own ground. Several councillors said tl*» stone was a kind valuable for road-making, and would be required on Newington road, and it was decided to decline rho application.—The Town Clerk, Dunedin, wrote to the Council, in reply to their inquiry upon what terms the City Council would erect and supply gaa for two lamps on Newington road, stating that the City Council's Ga« Committee could not see "their way at present to erect the lamps- The Clerk said ha had interviewed the town clerk of Dunedin, and pointed out that the reply was not an answer to the request, and that gentleman hud replied that the City Council could not lay the mains along the read unless there was a guarantee of so many residents taking the g»s. The Corporation would lay the mains if the Borough Council guaranteed the cost. The letter was received.—The Town Clerk, Roslyn, wrote stating that as the concessions granted to the Caversham Gas Company by several of the suburban boroughs would expire about the same time, it had occurred to the Roelyn Borough Council that a conference of the several councils interested would be desirable, with a view to taking united action iu making new arrangements for street lighting and the supply of gas to householders- It was decided to reply to the effect that the Council would appoint representatives whenever the Koslyn Connell called the conference. — It was decided that the clerk should write to the Honlyn Borough Council suggesting that the Works Committee of each Council should meet in conference in regard to necessary repairs on the Wakari road, being the boundary between the boroughs.—The Drainage and Sewerage Board wrote stating that the Board could not see their way to assist in the matter of drainage at Mr G. J’- Clulee’s property, Carrington. The Board also had received the Council’s request lor 10 per cent, commission on money collected in respect to the Board’s levy, and offered instead 5 per cent., which amount had been accepted by other borough®. The letter was received, ami it was resolved to adhere to the CouneU's former proposal of JQ per cent- commission.—The request for the Ocean Beach Domain Board’s payment of a contribution of £6 Os lOd, pursuant to section 28 of the. constituting Act, was passed for paywant.
