THE LABOR MARKET. The 'Journal of Labor’ for Jose 14 baa the following references to the state of the local labor market:— Oamaru. Building trades: Fairly good. Engineering trade: Tradesmen are now able to cope with all the orders that ate coming in. Unskilled labor: Good. Ploughmen are very scarce, in fact they are not in the market. Aa for domestic servants, they are not to be had. As there have been no applications daring the month evidently all laborers an fully employed. Dunedin.—Building trades: These trades are in much the same condition as last reported. There are still a few carpenters out of employment, and several removed to other centres. The outlook of the trades, however, is brighter, several large contracts being in prospect Engineering trades: The trade, generally speaking, is quiet, and a number of engineers out of work. Boot trade: la fair, factories being well employed. It is regrettable to chronicle the closing of one factory, thereby causing a number of workers to be placed on the unemployed list Clothing trade: The factory trade baa experienced a considerable shrinkage, and some are working only half-time, shop trade and dressmaking being very slack. Retail trade {general): Fair business being done, but retailer* complain of the tightness of money. Unskilled labor: During the month a noticeable decrease .has taken place in the number of applicants for employment There are still, however, a considerable number, mostly single men. Work for such, on dairy farms, is plentiful, and no difficulty is in the road for them to be placed on such work, so long as they are suitable and willing. Balclntha.—Building trades: Busy. Unskilled labor: No inquiries for work. Weather hampering dredging operations.
