The condition of Mr ffidey (father of the member for Oreraham) and of Mr John Mooat it causing anxiety to their friends. Dr Smith, of Balctatha, was seriously iH at the end of last week, but shows signs of improvement. Mr H. Maxwell has been appointed registrar of electors for the Dunedin and Cawsham electorates. Mr J. S. 8. Cooper, who was last evening appointed to the position of mathematical instructor to the Boys' High School, is qualified to teach up to the secondary schools' standard in mathematics, mechanics, phvsica, chemistry, geology, botany, Latin, English, and French. He entered the University as a student of Canterbury College in 1896, having obtained first place in the ordinary scholarship examinations in the previous December. All through his course he had given special study to mathematics, as well as physical scien**. In his second year he reached the final section of his B.A. degree, and in the third passed, as well as taking the senior University scholarship in the two subjects mentioned. He also qualified for the Canterbury College exhibitions in these subjects, and again held the exhibition for mathematics. At the November examinations in 1899 he obtained his M.A. degree with first class honors in mathematics and physical science. Next year he obtained the degree of B.Sc. As to his teaching experience, he has for several years acted as private coach for university examinations, and for short periods has held the position of locum tenens at Christchurch Boys' High School and' Christ's College. During 1901 he was acting science master at Auckland Grammar School, and since the beginning of the year has been assistant at Marlborough High School. He has also been a representative footballer, and is a tennis player as well.

.Inspector Mills, who has had charge of the Stock Department for the Tuapeka district for the past three years, is under orders for transfer to Wellington, His successor will be "Inspector M'Leod, now of Clyde. Mr Sidey, sen., is rapidly improving, and there is no cause for further anxiety. - Mr Ben Fuller (who is now settled, in Tasmania, wnere Mr John Fuller has two variety companies) is at present on a, visit to this City.
