INDUSTRIAL SCHOOL REGULATIONS

This week's 'Gazette' will contain regulations which have been framed for the management of children in ' industrial schools. These state that female inmate* over twelve years of age are, as far as practicable, to be taught domestic work. The instruction of female inmates over fourteen years of age is to include household man agement, cooking,- laundry work, sewing, darning, cutting out. and setting plain work for sewing machine. Care must be taken that no inmate is required to do work beyond her strength. It is to be the aim of the managers to direct the attention of all inmates to rural life and rural occupations wherever practicable. Regular instruction in swimming is to be given to resident inmates. They are also to receive elementary tuition, and individual practice in life-saving. Military drill for boys and appropriate physical exercises for girls resident at the schools will form part of the school routine for not less than half an hour on each day on which school in struction is given. Managers are enjoined to see that all inmates have, under proper supervision, regular and sufficient opportunities for exercise and both indoor and outdoor recreation. A suitable library must be provided at each school. The inmates are to have access to it frequently. Every facility is to be. given by managers to ministers of religion and other authorised -religions .teachers for giving religiovs instruction to inmates of their particular creed or.' denomination. Wherever practi; cable, resident inmates are to be taken regularly to the place of worship of the particular creed or denomination to which i hey belong.
