AS APPEAL FOR OUR BANDS.

TO TEUS EDITOR. ' Sir suppose most of your readers are aware that three of our local brass bands intend comjwting at the foitoning content to be decided at New Plymouth, provided they can raise the necessary funds--that is, about £l4O each. The Dunedm public seem blind to the fact that a band in rather an expensive institution, and it Dunetuh wishes to see her bands keep present very creditable position they must be prepared to help them. Now, one of the ways m which the bands are trying to raise the money is by giving open-air concerts in the Gardens and at St. Clair, but the amount received this way is very disheartening. It is very important thai our bands should attend these contests, whn:n we in nealilv examinations, and the only standajjl by "which they can measure thenimprovement. I hope the Dunedin public will take this hint, and subscribe a little more liberally. If each person gave something, no matter how small, we should soon raise sufficient funds. T am sure the band? deserve it, as they are always to the front in airy public or charitable object. I think if a foreign band can come here and make a living by public subscriptions that the public can spare a little lor tlierr own bands. I hope that tJbe next concert will show soma improvement in this matter. Thanking you, sir, in anticipation—l am, etc.. Bandsman. February 14.
