PRESENTATION.
Mr A. R Jay, who is leaving Dunedin for Christchurch, was entertained at the Grand Hotel last evening by a large number of rowing and cycling friends. Mr Jay, who goes to Christchurch on Monday to take charge of one of Ross and Gleodimng’s departments there, has for a considerable period been doeeh’ connected with rowing and cycling in Dunedin and has made himself very popular, and that popularity was tangibly evidenced last evening, when he was the recipient of presentations from the Dunedin Cycling Club, North End Boating Club, and Otago Rowing Association. Mr L. R. Wilson, president of the Otago Rowing Association, occupied the chair, and waS supported bv Messrs S. S. Myers (president North End Boating Club), A. E. Finch (president Dunedin Cycling Club), CP. M. Butterworth. W. L. Hooper, J James, W. Wills, G. Dey, F. Anderson, and J. H. Crawford. Besides these there were present a number of representatives from the Otago Rowing Association, Dunedin Cycling Club, Port Chalmers Regatra Committee, Ravensboume Regatta Committee, and the Firms Tournament Committee — bodies of which Mr Jay is at present an active member. Among apologies itceived for non-attendance were the following:—Messrs P. Wales (president D.C.C.), D. Wall (captain D.C.C.), G. Hogan (captain D.A.8.C.), W. J. Wilson (captain Q. and W. J. Waters (chairman Port Chalmers Regatta Committee). The Chairman said they had met that evening to bid Mr Jay faroweU and wish him success in his new vocation. He understood that it was the intention of each of the bodies with which Mr Jay was' connected to present him with some token of their esteem and appreciation of tie valuable services rendered by him in their cause. During Mr Jay’s occupancy of the position of secretary several things had taken place in connection -with rowing, and the secretary, of course, had had a good deal to do with these reforms. Every office undertaken by Mr Jay had been faithfully and energetically carried ont. Air S. S. Myers, as president of the N.E.8.C., testified to the good work done by Mr Jay, and on behalf of the North End Boating Club presented him with a case of pipes. Air A. A. Finch, vice-president of the Dunedin Cycling Club, in the unavoidable absence of the president, also presented him with a smoker’s outfit.
Messrs C, P. M. Butterworti, W. L. Hooper, J. H. Crawford, and J. James spoke in eulogistic terms of the good work done by Mr over a gold Maltese pendant, silver-mounted ivory-handled walking-stick, and oAher articles, bearing suitable inscriptions. Mr Jay replied in a humorous speech, thanking Hie various clubs for the kindly feeling exhibited, and attributed the success of any little efforts he had put forward to the energetic people with whom he had been associated. The health of Mr Jay was then toasted, several songs rendered, and a pleasant -evening spent.
