TURNS ON RUSSELL’S LAND PURCHASE SCHEME. Pres* Association—By Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, February 6. (Received February 7, at 9.54 a.m.) The election to fill the vacancy of Down (East), consequent upon Mr J. A. Benton!’* appointment to a minor Judgeship, resulted in Mr Wood, supporter of Mr T. W. Russell’s land purchase scheme, being returned, he defeating Mr Wallace, the Unionist candidate, by 147. [This is a loss to the Government, the former member being a Conservative. J!r Rusal's scheme is opposed by the present Ministry.]
