The Colonial Sugar Company have teduced the price of sugar (all grades) 10s per ton. THE WOOL SALES. Messrs Dalgety and Co. report having received the following cable from their head office, dated London, 17ih inst.:—“ Wool sales opened with a large attendance of buyers ; competition animated ; fair selection. Prices for merino wools in general 5 per cent, to 7A per cent, higher; fine cross-bred wools in general 5 per cent, to 7i per cent, higher; and for the bulk of medium and coarse cross-bred wools prices are on the average at par to 5 per cent, hi: her. Total available, including old stocks (Australasian, colonial, and Cape), 303,000 bales. The sales by private treaty between series amounted to 2,000 bales.” LONDON, September 18.—At the wool sales, Messrs Balme and Co., Buxton and Ronald, and Jacomb and Son offered 11,643 bales, comprising a fair selection. There was a full attendance, and strong competition from all parts ex< opt America. Compared with the closing sales in the July series, medium low cross-breds. fine merinoes, and fine cross-breds were 7£ per cent, higher. Extra fine merinoes sold, at 10 per cent, higher. .SYDNEY, September 18.—The local wool sales reflected the London advance. Competition for the finer classes of merinoes and greasies was very keen. The market is firm, and advancing. The catalogues included a fair sprinkling of the new season’s wool. PORT CHALMERS GAS COMPANY. New retorts have been ordered, and will be erected before the winter. The profit and loss account shows a balance of £673 8s 7d, and a dividend of 10 per cent, is recommended, carrying balance of £IOO to reserve and £67 8s 7d to next year’s work. The retiring directors are Messrs Hodge and Campbell, who are eligible for re-election. Mr J. Shanks also offers himself for election as auditor. THE MARKETS. Best bullocks brought £9 to £lO 15s; extra heavy, £ll 5s to £l2; medium, £7 17s 6d to £8 17s 6d ; light, £6 5s to £7 10s ; best heifers, £8 2s 6d to £9 10s; medium do and cows, £5 15s to £7 12s 6d; aged cows, £3 10s to £4 17s 6d. Suckers brought 5s to Hs; slips, 14s 6d to 16s 6d; stores, 18s to 21s; porkers, 23s to 30s; baconers, 36s to 545; choppers, up to 60s. WOOL FREIGHTS. WELLINGTON, September 19.—1t is stated that the wool freights for the season have been fixed at 7-16 d per lb (with 5 per cent, primage) by steamer, and -jjd by sailer. These figures show a reduction of l-16d by steamer and by sailer. Pressure is being exerted to secure a further concession.
