THE EMPIRE'S DESTINY

Mr Henry Sulley, the well-known architect, of Nottingham, England, gave the first of a series of lectures in the Agricultural Hall last evening. Mr R. Baxter presided, and read the 60th chapter of Isaiah.. Mr Sulley, who was listened to by an attentive audience, in the course of his address, based his remarks on the destiny and development of the British Empire and its association with prophecy fulfilled and fulfilling. He pointed out that God had brought the British nation into great prominence, using them for the fulfilment of His promise in regathering the Jews. Reference was also made to the friendly position Britain had always taken up towards the Jewish people, and the speaker showed that ultimately by the overshadowing influence of Britain, they would again be nationalised in their own land, Palestine. He then wont on to show that after the preadvental regathering there would be a conflict between England and Russia for the protectorate over Palestine which she received at the Berlin Conference. This would result from Russia looking on Palestine " with an evil eye," and seeking to take it The British would help to protect it, and for a time would suffer defeat, but God would intervene. The Messiah would appear to establish universal monarchy. This was shown to be a tangible reason why the Jewish question should interest thoughtful people, as a future life was contingent on a return of Christ to the earth, who would rule the earth in righteousness. The present movement of Imperial Federation, Mr Sulley considered, was foretold in Ezekiel; also the wonderful Zionist movement of recent development. Mr Snlley's second lecture will be given to-morrow evening ; in the Alhambra Theatre, on the subject 'The Signs of the Coming of the Son of Man.'
