COMMERCIAL.
The National Mortgage and Agency Company report the sale of the Elephant Hill Estate, near Waimate to Mr Lewis Mathias, of Leestone, Canterbury, comprising 6,936 acre 3 freehold, with a verv fine flock of superior cross-bred sheep (mostly breeding ewes) of over 6,000 in number, and of the other stock, implements, etc, on the property. THE LABOR MARKET. John Skene and Son report:—The market keeps brisk, ploughmen being in great demand. Milkers are well sought after, top wages being offered. There is also a good call for active young shepherds and musterers. The following classes are engaged daily:—Experienced cooks, laborers, station knock-abouts, grooms and gardeners, and general hotel hands. In the female line there is brisk demand for cooks, waitresses, housemaids, and generals. Wages all round keep exceptionally good. All classes are a little scarce. SALE OF HIDES. Matheson, Prain, and Co. report having held their regular fortnightly sale of hides at their, stores, Crawford street, yesterday afternoon. ' There was a full representation of the trade, and under slow bidding prices realised were a little under those of their former sale.
