Lieut.-Colonel Cameron, returned by lasmania for the Senate, is an uncompromising opponent of woman suffrage. With reference to defence matters, he says the late war showed fully the unpreparedness of England for action. * The long-range guns and smokeless powder had revolutionised matters of defence. He favors every man in Tasmania being able to take his place in the ranks if wanted, and the Government to supply free ammunition.

Mr King O'Maßey, returned for the House, is described as a versatile Canadian. He claims to have Canadian experience, and American Federal experience, and to be the only practical federalist engaged in the late campaign. He told the Launceston electors that the curse of the country was fossildom and bob-tailed Boxers, and an alteration would be made if they had a Dick Seddon to run the show for a few years. Out of the twenty-six New South Wales seats in the House of Representatives candidates were selected by the Freetrade and Liberal Association to contest twenty-three, and they managed to carry seventeen of the number, including the four Sydney electorates. No Freetrade candidate was put forward for The Hunter, Eden-Monaro, or Richmond. The Protectionist's' victories were: Gwydir Hume, The Darling, Bland, Cowper, and Riverind. Among the defeated Tasmanian candidates for the Senate were Messrs Alfred Page, A. Morrisbk, and W. Moore, M-L.C.s. and Mr R. C. Patterson, M.H.A., Mr W. Hartnell, M.H.A., was rejected for the House of Representatives. The "Barton Austral-British Liberal policy" is how some of the Ministerialists described their platform. Among the defeated candidates for the Senate in New South Wales were: Colonel Lasseter (who had command of the Federal Contingent), # Mr Eden ■ George (erstwhile Mayor of Christchurch, and a photographer who was in business in the Octagon here a few years' ago), Sir W. Pi Manning, the Hon/ G. H- Cox, M.L.C. (one of the oldest politicians in the Mother Colony), Mr John Norton, M.L.A. (editor of 'Sydney Truth'). Mr R. D. Meagher, M.L.A. (who figured prominently in the notorious Dean case), Colonel J. A. K. Mackay. The Freetrade ticket*was theHon.- 3. 11.I 1 . Walker, the Hon. A. J. Gould, M.L.C., Mr Edward Davis Miller, the Hon. Edward Pulsford, Mr John Proctor Gray, and Mr John 0. Neild. All but Mr" Gray were returned, though there were no less than fifty candidates.
