MEETINGS OF SOCIETIES.

The fortnightly meeting of the Hand and Heart Lodge, M.U., was held in the lodge room, Stuart street, on Tuesday evening. K.G. H. .1. Johnston presided. An official visit was received from various lodges of the Order. The second toast‘was, responded to by N.G. Smith (Valley Lodge), N.G. Pearce (Caversham), N.G. Bell (Prince of Wales), N.G. Jones (Albion), G.M. Crosbic (Dunedin), P.G. Mood (Dalton),E.S. Greenwood (Kaitangata), N.G. Mf,Gregor. (Waikaka), and Bro. Humphries (Diamond Jubilee). One candidate was initiated. A smoke concert was then held, the following contributing: P.G. Clark, Bros. Foster. P.G. Alexander, P.G. Gallagher (encored). Bro. Docherty, Bro. Williams, P.G. Millier, G.M. Harniway, V.G. Flynn (encored). Bro. Gaul. The toasts honored were:—“ The King and M.U.,” “District Officers,” “Hand and Heart Lodge,” “The Visitors,” “ Hostess” (Miss Murray), and “Accompanist” (Mr.A. Vallis). During tire interval P.P.G.M. Sligo, on behalf of the lodge, presented P.G. J. Broadfoot with a gold albert chain and pendant in appreciation of valuable services rendered to the lodge. P.G. Broadfoot suitably responded. His health was also drunk. A meeting of the Temperance Committee elected in connection with that department of Methodist Central Mission work was held in the Mission Hall last evening, the Rev. W. A. Sinclair, presiding. Mr Donald Cameron was elected secretary. It was agreed to form a young crusaders society. . Agitation among the young people is to be taken against drinking especially, but also against evils of smoking, swearing, and gambling. An open-air temperance meeting is to be held once a month in the Octagon. It was resolved to aim at obtaining 1,000 new pledges during the coming winter season. The subject of athletic .clubs hold-, ing their : meetings in hotels is to ibe dealt with .shortly. .A motion to recommend the Council of Churches to,endeavor to arrange . fqr a continuation of the temperance column in the daily Press was carried. , : i A good audience .assembled in the. Oddfellows’ Hall, Bnslyn,, .on, Wednesday, when an entertainment was given’to celebrate the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Star of Freedom Lodve of Good Templars. .. Bros.
