Melbourne ' Punch * is responsible for this :-- As an amusing instance of what may happen to royalty on its travels, an experience of the Duke of Edinburgh in Dunedin is -worth recalling. It came to the ears of Detective Christie, 'who was shadowing the Duke, that a lady had made a -wager that she would pinch the Duke's arm on a certain public occasion. The daring gambler managed to edge closa up to H.R.H., but as she raised her hand to effect ber purpose Christie gracefully bent forward, took the lady's hand, raised hu hat, and with a gallant "How d'ye do?" kept her in conversation. She lost her bet.
