The tourist traffic on the Wanganui River this season is the largest on record. Messrs Hatrick and. Co., the pioneer steamboat owners on the Wanganui. have extended the steamer traffic some twenty miles beyond Pipiriki. ' J

Quite a smart steaming performance is credited to the Mararoa on her recent passage- from Gisborne to Auckland. She covered the distance in 19h 40min. Bad weather necessitated her sheltering under Nick's Head for some time while gob"- from Napier to Gisborne.

Good progress is being made by the crew of the French barque Max with the repairs to the vessel at Auckland. The yards are now being hoisted into place on the "new foremast.

During the voyage of the barquentine Valador from Port Stephens to Auckland with hardwood timber her fore-royal mast was sprung, and had to be cut away. The Union Company's Maori, from Wellington, arrived at the Port at 6.30 a.m yesterday, and steamed alongside the George street pier. A NOTABLE SALVAGE CASE. On the 20th September last the steamship India, homeward bound from Java with a cargo of 8,000 tons of sugar, stranded on the East African coast, about thirty miles south of Cuandafri. She was abandoned by her crew and lay there until the middle of October, when an expedition, fitted out ot Aden, under Captain Pomeroy, underwriter's salvage officer, arrived on the snot and ousted the Natives, who in the meanwhile had swarmed over the vessel, lootino- and destroying everything available. Affer repeated failures she was finally floated and brought into Aden Harbor to refit. Some ot the scenes witnessed at the strandina place were so novel as to be almost in' credible. Goat and sheer, skins were filled three-quarters full with sugar, then blown up with air to give them buoyancy, and thus about 8,000 Natives were actively eneaeed enriching themselves for life, and a filet of dhows and hundreds of camels were constantly employed bearing off the spoil to unknown destinations.
