AUSTRALIAN NOTES.
Professor Allen, of Melbourne UDiversity, in an interview, suggests a way out of the Marshall-Hall-Peterson tangle. He thinks that Mr Peterson might come to fulfil the lecturing of the Ormond Chair of Music, and that Professor Marshall-Hall still retain the control and conduct of the Conservatorium of Music. The release of a number of prisoners on account of the inauguration of the Commonwealth appears to have been a big blander. At Adelaide the act of clemency on the part of the Government was followed by a number of burglaries, robberies, and assaults, which were the means of keeping the local police unusually busy. Most golfers will remember the story of the man wtiom a bat', rendered insensible. The golfer gave him half a sovereign as some consolation. ” And when will ye be playin’ again ?’’ asked the injured man, as he looked at the coin.
